Co-Premiere | Clive Tanaka :: Neu Chicago (video)

The mystery behind Clive Tanaka y su orquesta goes beyond the name; it’s built into the music itself. Going from his usual, almost robotic sound to a distorted, underwater gentleman in “Neu Chicago,” Mr. Tanaka is tough to identify, and his debut release, Jet Set Siempre 1º, is just as elusive. Clive says “Neu Chicago” recaps the tale of astronaut-returned-home, Buck Rogers, and Colonel Wilma Deering, who’s been waiting for him her entire life. Though it may explain a few of the lines, it’s still a pretty curious song. In the above video for “Neu Chicago,” creator Brandom Domer didn’t try and capture the semi-tropical essence of the Jet Set highlight, but created something entirely different — growing foam animals and all. Be sure to head over to Altered Zones to read what they had to say in their co-premiere, and click here to purchase Jet Set Siempre 1º.

Clive Tanaka y su orquesta ∆ Neu Chicago

In “Neu Chicago,” a distant static quickly works itself into a tropical, head-bob inducing blend of airy guitars, (Hawaiian)punching bass, and underwater steel drums that put you on an island in front of a beautiful native with all the right words to say. You’ll be feeling great before the vocals kick in, but once they do, good luck keeping this song off repeat. The voice is bizarre and irresistible. Mr. Tanaka’s debut tape, Jet Set Siempre 1º, is full of equally captivating tracks that are all worth your time. Check out “I Want You (So Bad)” below and then head here to purchase his tape for just $6. Also, one hundred thank you’s to Jheri Evans at Get Off the Coast for getting ahold of this tape and exposing it digitally.
